Adoption
I may not always understand the whole homeschool culture (despite working with those students on a weekly basis!), but one thing I really respect is how many people adopt and even take guardianship of kids from other countries and even kids with special needs. I am amazed how many kids I meet and later realize that they are from white families! Kudos to these families!
In other news, Christmas is almost here, and I am off from work for almost 3 weeks-glorious!! Hooray for homeschoolers wanting time off!!
Art Shows
So, as an aspiring artist-one of my goals for the year is to more proactively seek out shows to enter my work into. It’s incredibly hard to pay attention to all the calls for art on specific topics, and make an artwork in time for that topic and enter it in and actually get it in! But, if I don’t try I’ll never get anywhere. There is one group that I think I have the best show with and they need digital pics of work and they are going to make thank-you cards out of them. I have been stuck because I don’t have the nicest of digital cameras, but then I just remembered that my friend Jon is a destination wedding photographer, and he lives right down the street from me! I called him and he said that if I bring my work to his studio tomorrow morning, he will photograph it for me and give me the images. hooray! If I have any chance of getting my work chosen, this will be the way it happens! Having quality images of your work is one of the most valuable things you can do for yourself!
Christmas shopping
As hard as it is for me to believe, it is Christmas season already, and despite the 75 degree heat wave of a week we had for Thanksgiving, it really is time for me to get my shopping done. I think I’ll be buying almost everything online or at art shows this year-the mall just makes me want to choke. There is nothing original there, and it is so materialistic. I enjoy searching out good deals at consignment shops, or supporting local artists. Another thing that is crazy is the amount of pirate stuff there is out there to buy right now. Can we attribute this souly to the success of the Pirates of the Carribean movies? I’m not sure, but somehow these villans of the sea have become a pop icon idol and you can buy everything from skull and cross bone scarves, tights, leather pirate boots, bedding, or jack sparrow hair brushes. Why would anyone need a jack sparrow hair brush? Why would the company even think that that would be a good product to produce? Americans have too much money!!
